On being a Solid Mechanician at Caltech

Starting from my graduate applications time, it's been my dream to do Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics at Caltech. Caltech has broad range of faculty that are pioneers in their sub-fields. Starting from Prof. von Karman, Caltech has a great list of such pioneers. Prof. Wolfgang Knauss, Prof. Ares Rosakis, Prof. Michael Ortiz, Prof. G Ravichandran, etc are a few to name. This blog is all about my experiences of being a solid mechanics PhD student in Mechanical Engineering department at Caltech. First of all, I always feel it always feel great to run into these professors and say hi to them. In addition, there are special solid mechanics symposiums, where you get to listen about work of most of your peers on one day (like Knowles Symposium), or milestone professor birthday symposiums (where students of these professors from different universities give talk) etc. While MCE department is composed of Solids, Fluids and Controls researchers, most of the seminar talks in MCE are of Solid Mechanics. We get a chance to listen to pioneers from other universities. Stay tuned for more experiences..

I got to see ppl like Martin Wegener, Vikram Deshpande, Subra Suresh, Katia Bertoldi, Alan Needleman, Cate Brinson gave talks here.
